Grape Agate are a Chalcedony formation. They formi in pockets from the deposition of groundwater in the cavities of igneous rocks. They are intergrowths of Silica, Quartz and Moganite. The purple coloured botryoidal forms of Chalcedony are called Grape Agate and can occur in geodes, as a secondary growth or as a layer within other crystal structures. Mineral silica is are slowly deposited into host rocks such as granite sometimes forming round blobs that look like a bunch of fresh grapes.

There are many forms of Chalcedony (most are Agates and Quartz varieties). Purple Grape Agate is the specific formation found in Manakarra in the Sulawesi Island of Indonesia. The colours can range from a deep purple to a light lavender and even green.
